The Ohio State University Extension in Mahoning County is offering Cooking Matters, a health-conscious cooking class for low-income adults. It is one of twenty two counties offering this program throughout Ohio. The Cooking Matters curriculum teaches low-income adults about healthy meal preparation and sensible shopping on a limited budget. Each week, participants observe a multi-session course that combines hands-on food preparation with nutrition information, food budgeting and shopping techniques. After each lesson, participants take home the ingredients and the materials necessary to make a healthy meal. It provides one-on-one learning and cooking techniques to low income individuals who might not have experience making healthy meals. Cooking Matters promotes using fresh ingredients instead of prepared, processed foods which are usually unhealthy food options.
