Monarch caterpillars feed exclusively on the leaves of milkweed, the only host plant for this iconic butterfly species. As such, milkweed is critical for the survival of monarchs. Without it, they cannot complete their life cycle, and their populations decline. Eradication of milkweed both in agricultural areas as well as in urban and suburban landscapes is one of the primary reasons that monarchs are in trouble today.
Planting milkweed is one of the easiest ways that each of us can make a difference for monarchs. Planting local milkweed species is always best, so stop in at The Mahoning County Extension Office to get yours!
Looking for other types of milkweed? Consider purchasing swamp milkweed or butterfly weed plants (both types of milkweed that look great in the garden). At this link – http://go.osu.edu/growmilkweed - you can seed the milkweeds that are available as container plants to help the monarchs.
Also, you can plant lots of beautiful flowers, trees, and shrubs that are beneficial to our native pollinators. For a list of plants to start with, check out: https://ohioline.osu.edu/factsheet/ent-78
